A large fire has damaged a workshop at a horse trailer manufacturing company in central Hawke’s Bay overnight.

The emergency call was received at midnight,  and firefighters rushed to the fire at the the Classic Horse Coaches workshop, about 2 kilometres north of Ormondville.

Fire service spokesman Mike Wanoa said the large workshop was “well involved” when the first crew arrived on Thursday morning, and backup teams came from Norsewood, Takapau and Dannevirke.

“It was well ablaze, and another shed beside it was at risk.”

It was not clear if any hazardous materials were on site.

Classic Horse Coaches has previously been the subject of controversy and complaints about  its horse boxes, including a Fair Go investigation.

A fire investigator was expected to visit the scene later on Thursday morning, Wanoa said.
