After Letterman retired in 2015, O’Brien penned a heartfelt tribute to his fellow comedian in Entertainment Weekly, which Letterman greatly appreciated, so much so that he told O’Brien he would get him a gift.

Telling the story to Letterman’s replacement Stephen Colbert last week, O’Brien described how the next day, two cowboys arrived an hour before he went on hour with a horse, named Dave.

In a hilarious interview he went on to describe to cost and logistical difficulties of owning a horse, eventually donating the animal to a training centre for horse masseurs.

But on Kimmel a few days later, Letterman revealed he had only sent the horse as a joke, that he was supposed to ‘take a dump’ on Conan’s show and that he would then send him back.

He said he received a ‘warm lovely letter to say his wife loved the horse and she was going to keep it ‘because she is an equestrian.’

‘So now I’m screwed because I was counting on him to return the horse and I can get my money back,’ he said adding horses could be returned ‘at a terrible discount.’

For two years he heard nothing more — until Conan turned up on Colbert to complain about it.

On Friday, Conan posted a video to Letterman FINALLY returning the horse after two years.

‘Sorry about the whole mix-up regarding Dave the horse,’ he apologized to the camera. ‘When you sent him to me I had no idea that he was a rental.’

‘Well, these things happen all the time when one man sens another man a horse

The camera panned out to show the offending animal, complete with Letterman-style face fuzz.

‘He’s grown kind of a long kooky beard… I guess that’s his thing now,’ he added.

‘I’m gonna miss that guy, he admitted as he slapped a postal tag on his hind and sent him into a waiting UPS truck.
